SCHEDULE:
9:30     COFFEE and SOCIAL TIME
10:00
  • Traveling the Road with Pierre de la Rue: Songs from the Heart  (Ellen)
Come along on a journey as we discover the rich harmonies and deeply personal music of Renaissance master Pierre de la Rue.  A favorite of royalty, especially of Margaret of Austria, de la Rue was a Renaissance master whose uncommonly beautiful and expressive music is as rewarding to play as it is to hear.
  • Consort Technique:  Plays Well With Others  (Pat)
How well do you interact with others in your group?  How well can you listen to other parts while playing your own?  Does it terrify you to be responsible for starting, setting a tempo, or ending a piece?  How do you get back in with your mates when you get lost?  What’s the best way to make suggestions to your ensemble?  Come with your questions and your terrors!
11:00    BREAK
11:15
  • Baroque repertory (Jennifer)
Immerse yourself in the luscious harmonies of the chamber works of Henry Purcell.
  • Medieval Musical Puzzles: Decoding Secular Songs of the 14th-Century  (Ellen)
Let’s come together to explore the intriguing songs and musical puzzles unique to the Medieval world.  From clever rhythms to hocketing melodies and layered polyphony favoring open harmonies, let’s explore what defines the distinctive sound of Medieval music.
  • Renaissance Recorders (Pat)
What do you mean, 6-foot pitch?  What’s alla quarta bassa mean?  One-on-a-part consort for advanced players willing to learn different fingerings, playing Pat and Doug’s matched set of recorders tuned to A=466.  Ability to play G fingerings a plus, but not absolutely necessary.  Be sure to give 2nd choice.
12:30    LUNCH
1:15
  • Renaissance repertoire (Pat)
Viva Petrucci!  Music took a GIANT leap forward in 1501, when Petrucci introduced Odhecaton, the first edition of music from movable type.  He followed that with more editions both sacred and secular, featuring the most popular composers of the day, and revolutionizing the availability of music to more than just those who could afford hand-copied volumes.  We’ll sample several of his earliest publications.
  • Modern repertoire (Jennifer)
Let’s boogie-woogie to Big Band and ragtime classics.
2:30     BREAK
2:45     Group Play and Recorder Orchestra (sopranino-contrabass), including:
  • Sonata in 3 for 4 by David Hurd (2026 ARS Play the Recorder piece)
  • Rachmaninoff Vocalise (SAATBBGbGbCb)
  • Mozart Queen of the Night aria (SiAATTBBGbCb; larger insts. if available)
