TRS Early Music Workshop 2023
Our TRS spring workshop was a success! Thanks to TRS member Toby Speed for this great write up:
Mediterranean Holiday with the Triangle Recorder Society
Music from France, Spain, and Italy filled the high-ceilinged rooms of the First Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC, on April 15th as the Triangle Recorder Society (TRS) welcomed back its annual early music workshop. TRS’s signature offering has been held for more than a quarter of a century with a break only in the last two years for COVID. This year’s theme, Mediterranean Holiday, attracted 25 attendees from the Triangle and beyond as well as an elite faculty of seven recorder professionals.
Our tour guides for the musical journey through Southern Europe were Stewart Carter, Phil Hollar, Holly Maurer, Patricia Petersen, Kathy Schenley, Jennifer Streeter, and Douglas Young. Small-group workshops were presented for all levels throughout the day.
Topics for those sessions included beginning consort playing, ornamentation, menuets from King Louis XIV’s dance parties, antiphonal music of the Venetian composers, the rhythms of Spanish dance, and one-line melodies with improvised drones, percussion, and voice. Besides recorder, many of the workshops welcomed voices, strings, and early reeds and brass, which made for some very fun ensemble playing. A session on loud Renaissance band music, for instance, featured cornettos, crumhorns, sackbuts, and more.
The highlight of the day was an inspiring group playing session in the main room for all musicians. It perfectly capped the uplifting nature of the day and marked a welcome return to in-person ensemble playing.
Mediterranean Holiday now joins the archives of Spring Workshops in TRS’s history that have covered such territory as North Sea Odyssey, French Connection, A Musical Brexit, March Musical Madness, Northern Lights, Saints and Sinners, and Viva Petrucci!
TRS has been in existence since 1967 and meets on the third Sunday of each month at rotating locations throughout the Triangle. All skill levels are welcome, and the first meeting is free. Class descriptions
Early morning classes (AM1)
- Beginning Recorder Essentials: Schenley. A great introduction to workshop playing for the new recorder player. Lots of individual attention.
- Recorder Consort: Varied consort repertory led by various faculty. Recorders only; low intermediate and up. We divide you by skill level.
- Renaissance Recorder Consort: Young. One-on-a-part consort for advanced players willing to learn different fingerings, playing a matched set of recorders tuned to A=466. Instruments will be sanitized beforehand, and not shared during the class. Class size limited; be sure to give 2nd choice!
Late morning classes (AM2)
- Dancing with the Stars: Hollar. Jehan Tabourot, better known to musicians by his pen name Thoinot Arbeau, was an authority on astronomy and French dance. We will see if our stars align while we sample some of the dances in his Orchesography publication. Recorders only; low intermediate and up.
- Ornament With Style: Petersen. What’s Baroque about Baroque music? The elegance of the appoggiatura, the thrill of trills, the hunt for the essential hemiolas – with these three under your belt, you’ll be sounding like an 18th century musician in no time! Recorders only; intermediate and up.
- La bell'Italia!: Carter. Italian madrigals as well as lighter vocal and instrumental works. Recorders, viols, voices; intermediate and up.
- Chansons from the south of France: Maurer. Jacques Moderne, rival publisher to Attaingnant, printed music in the important town of Lyon which included a sizable Italian community taking advantage of the trade between France and Italy. We’ll play pieces by composers who made Lyon their home and which were published by Moderne. Recorders and viols; high intermediate and up.
- Double the fun: Streeter. 8-part antiphonal music of the Gabrielis and other Venetian composers at the Basilica San Marco in the early 17th century. Recorders only; high intermediate and up.
Early afternoon classes (PM1)
- Josquin and friends: Petersen. Italy was a magnet for the abundance of composers from France and the low countries in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Most of the well-known composers of the day worked in the Vatican and/or in other courts and chapels. We’ll take a look at what they were up to there. Recorders only; intermediate and up.
- April in Paris: Carter. Chansons and related works from 15th and 16th-century France. Recorders and viols; intermediate and up.
- Music from the Age of Discovery: Hollar. The music of 15th-century Spain was an amalgam of diverse cultures and influences. We will sample some of the music from the years leading up to Columbus’ infamous voyage. Recorders only; high intermediate and up.
- Zone In - Canzonas and Fantasias: Streeter. Late 16th and early 17th-century Italian instrumental music, including Frescobaldi, Gabrieli, and others. Recorders and viols; high intermediate and up.
- Let’s Dance: Maurer. Enjoy the rhythms of Spanish dance music as we play arrangements of the dances originally written for guitar by Gaspar Sanz, “Espanoleta” and “Canarios”. Recorders and viols; advanced.
Late afternoon classes (PM2)
- One-liners: Schenley. Sometimes a single melodic line is all you need! Los Cantigas de Santa Maria, from 13th-century Spain, are beautiful in their own right and lend themselves to embellishments with improvised drones, percussion, and voice. Let’s experiment! All instruments, all voices; all levels.
- Loud Band: Carter. All loud Renaissance instruments - cornettos, crumhorns, sackbuts, and others; intermediate and up.
- Vacation in Venice: Maurer. Just a short sail away from the Mediterranean is the city of Venice, home to composers such as Cipriano da Rore and Orazio Vecchi whose works we’ll play along with dances from the Marciano manuscript. Recorders and viols; intermediate and up.
- Let’s Menuet: Streeter. Play (and dance to) the tunes heard at King Louis XIV’s dance parties. Recorders and viols; intermediate and up.
- Verdelot in the Vanguard: Hollar. Philippe Verdelot is considered one of the fathers of the Italian madrigal despite his not being Italian. We will sample madrigals from throughout his career and see how the madrigal form progressed throughout its early years. Recorders only; high intermediate and up.
- The Isle of St. Hylarion: Petersen. Rhythm candy from the 14th century Cypriot French repertoire. Recorders only; advanced, with strong counting skills.
