Spring
workshop a grand success!
A crowd of sixty recorder players and early music enthusiasts gathered
at Carolina Friends School on March 12 for the spring workshop, “A Grand Tour
of Europe.” We spent a delightful spring
Saturday in the country with expert teachers from near and far. We hit the high
spots of the Grand Tour—Vienna, Venice, Paris, Rome, Florence, Antwerp, London,
Madrid as we traveled through musical Europe. We renewed acquaintances with
some we had not seen since last year’s workshop, sharpened our playing skills,
and became acquainted with some new music.
Participants were able to take classes from
Jack Ashworth (Louisville) Eric Haas (Boston) and North Carolina regulars
Stewart Carter (Winston-Salem), Michelle Oswell (Washington, DC), Patricia Petersen
& Kathy Schenley(Durham). The variety
and intriguing subjects of the sessions made each of us wish that we could be
at least two people for the day, and sample twice as many offerings.
Many thanks to everyone who made this possible, including the local TRS
members who provided the morning refreshments.
And, many thanks to those who traveled from near and far to share their
enjoyment in early music.

COMING UP IN JUNE:
You may remember the Mennonite concert given by the fabulous Dutch
early music ensemble Camerata Trajectina several years ago. This
group from Utrecht returns to give another high-energy concert on Monday,
June 6, 8 pm, at Duke Chapel, co-sponsored by the Triangle Recorder Society
and by the Duke summer chamber music series. The ticket price is
$10, but the TRS will need extra financial assistance in putting this
event on. If you are interested in helping support this concert,
please contact Pat at 683-9672 or patpetersen@earthlink.net. ALSO: Saskia Coolen, wonderful Dutch recorder player and co-director of the group, is available for a master class on Tuesday, June 7. Pat will organize this master class ONLY if enough people are interested. Please give her a call or e-mail if you or your group would like to play for or audit (observe) a master class. |
